While research has, coach factory outlet coupons, beats by dr. dre headphones|A8B|, in the past, focused on the risks of infection related to surgery, the new study revealed some important new information, including:
About 2,000 Ontarians undergo ICD replacement annually and there are more than 5,000 patients each year Canada-wide.
The problems that occurred included stroke, coach outlet kittery maine, blood clots in the lungs, infections and electrical storm (severely abnormal and life-threatening heart rhythm). The researchers found that complications occurred most often in patients who suffered angina and those who took anti-arrhythmia drugs such as beta blockers and calcium channel blockers.

These complications are rarely fatal but are “often clinically devastating,” said Andrew Krahn, a cardiologist at the London Health Sciences Centre in London, Ont., and principal author of the research.
- Complications occurred most frequently in centres that performed the fewest surgical procedures.
- Most complications occur after the patient has left hospital, up to 45 days after surgery.
-The more complicated the devices, the more likely there were to be complications after surgery.

Dr. Krahn said that little is known about the rates and predictors of complications after ICD replacement but the large database of information kept by Ontario heart centres allows for this type of analysis. He noted, too, that ICD replacements are often done fairly arbitrarily, without much thought given to potential complications.
The findings, published in Wednesday’s edition of the medical journal Cardiology, involved 1,coach handbag outlet,081 patients who underwent battery replacement for their ICD at one of the 18 cardiac centres in Ontario between February 2007 and August 2009.
Douglas Lee,real coach bags for cheap|Q5N|, a scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto and co-author of the study, said the results should serve as a reminder to patients and physicians alike to be alert to problems after leaving hospital, even seemingly minor ones.
Maintenance of implanted defibrillators linked to complications
Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators – which automatically shock the heart back into normal rhythm – are lifesavers for people with fluttering hearts.
Forty-seven patients suffered complications, including 28 who had major complications that required hospitalization or further surgery.
But a new Canadian study reveals that a surprisingly high number of ICD patients – one in 25 – suffer complications after routine maintenance such as battery replacement.
- ICD patients who suffer complications have a dramatically higher risk of death from all causes. (However, there were no deaths directly related to ICD replacement in the study group.)
-Devices used to treat heart failure – as opposed to abnormal heart rhythms – have twice the rate of complications.
“This highlights the critical importance for patients who have undergone a defibrillator procedure to follow-up with their physicians should they suspect they have developed a device-related complication,Burberry bikini|discounted coach handbagS6K|Juicy,” Dr. Lee said.
