   Other storytellers share stuff
[11/07/2011 3:11 pm]

There’s the Culbertson Mansion, north face discount , the Carnegie Center for Art & History, the Division Street School and the Scribner House. New Albany and Floyd County’s story gets told here and there, mostly now and then. That’s without the old solid-brick house on a West Market Street corner that businessman Jim Padgett planned to level. Instead, he gave it up free of charge when asked to reconsider, and the building is now the Padgett Museum. The museum, which has been around for five years, does nicely with items donated and loaned, north face womens , getting much from volunteers. “All of us knew there was a void,” Floyd County historian David Barksdale said. “This home nudged us into filling it.” The Padgett Museum is open two days per week. It shuts down dead of winter. Its owner, the county’s Historical Society, does the best it can. Alice Glover guides tours, glad for the 40-plus visitors signed in most months. “When it’s something you love, it’s not a burden,” Glover said. The Historical Society doesn’t lack for material to display and to explain. Members fill basements and attics with potential showstoppers. Other storytellers share stuff, in a more-the-merrier spirit. Much of the first-floor exhibit came from the Carnegie Center, for instance. “We’ve gotten everyone’s hand-me-downs,” Barksdale said. “But they’re wonderful things.” Probably like every museum on Earth, this one could use much more storage. The two-story Greek revival building was initially the four-roomed home of a steamboat captain, and served as this and that before Padgett and preservationists cut their deal. Around for the better part of a century, the Historical Society apparently not had had a place, a home. It wasn’t especially looking for one, either, satisfied to sponsor displays at the Culbertson and elsewhere until fate intervened. “We didn’t think of the negative,” member Pam Peters said of getting into the museum game. “We think of the positive.” Or as Glover put it, “Every time someone walks through,The North Face Outlets , looks around and says, ‘I didn’t dream this was here,’ ” you know this is supposed to be here.”

On the field he stands out like a sore thumb
[11/07/2011 3:11 pm]

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Finding a single player among the 500-plus at Friday's Battle by the Beach 7-on-7 Football Tournament was like finding a needle in a haystack. Finding one of the country's most-sought receivers wasn't hard at all. Winter Park's D'Vario Montgomery is a tight end in a receiver's body. On the field he stands out like a sore thumb. Aside from having good speed -- 4.43 in 40 yards -- and crisp route running his 6-foot-2,The North Face Outlet , 210-pound frame allows him to be as physical as he wants to be. Maybe that's why the senior has his pick of more than 30 major college offers and is being heavily sought after by the state's big three -- Florida, Florida State and Miami. "It's just a process that most people go through and some people don't. All in all, it's kind of overwhelming," Montgomery said. "I'm just looking for a good school that I can go to and a place that I can call home. It really doesn't matter." Despite constant pressure to make a decision, women north face , he's determined to take his time with the recruiting process before making his choice official on National Signing Day next February. Academically, he is sound (he wants to study architecture) and physically he has all of the tools. Because of his strength and Size, north face discount , it's nearly impossible to jam him off the ball, but he also has solid pass-catching abilities and catches the ball at its highest point. "I saw him playing and I was nervous about him," Atlantic defensive back Adam Owens said. "I was like, "Man, I can't get (Randy) Mossed. I can't get beat deep." Rivals.com ranks Montgomery as a four-star recruit, the 21st-best receiver in the country and among the top 150 overall. He registered 45 tackles and three interceptions as an outside linebacker and safety, but he is being recruited as a receiver after hauling in 46 passes for 1,500 yards and 13 TDs last fall. "He's pretty darn good," Cocoa coach John Wilkinson said. Despite increased attention, Montgomery hasn't disappointed this summer. He caught 40 to 50 passes for more than 20 TDs in helping Winter Park top Tampa Plant, also here this weekend, 23-12 in the Sling 'N Shoot tournament last month at South Florida. Friday he was equally as impressive, pulling in several touchdowns and playing both ways. During a break in the action he said he will make official visits to Southeastern Conference schools Alabama, LSU and South Carolina, women north face , but his current two favorites are UCF and USF. "They're schools that I really get to see a lot," Montgomery said. "Right now it's time to cut down on some offers and go wherever I feel comfortable with." Surprisingly, Montgomery's childhood favorite, Ohio State, is one of the few that hasn't extended him a scholarship offer. He said he would still consider going there if an offer arrived, but helping him with the recruiting process is cousin, Steven Moffett, a starting quarterback at UCF from 2003-2006. Potential good news for UCF and bad for everyone else seeking Montgomery's services.

As streams of water rained down

As streams of water rained down, north face discount , shimmering in the midday sun, best friends Yasmine Hamadi and Celia Murphy danced through the spray. With the city all around them, the 11-year-olds splashed and squealed as if they had it all to themselves, darting through the falling showers again and again, but never in quite the same way. Finally, they decided to take a break. They ran to the side, where the adults were talking about the fountain on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, how there used to be a huge highway here, cutting right through everything. Looking around, the girls tried to picture it, but just could not.

   Rockaway in the pink
[11/07/2011 3:10 pm]

Debra and Katherine Chen are in the pink — literally — thanks to HGTV’s new series “Home By Novogratz.” In the premiere, husband-and-wife design team Robert and Cortney Novogratz take on the sisters’ Rockaways bungalow — transforming the fixer-upper into a girly beach retreat, replete with pink wallpaper, pink-painted floors, discount north face , pink rugs and plenty of pink accents — right down to a bright pink stove in the kitchen. “We were looking to make a beach house chic on a budget,” says Cortney. “The girls love surfing, and they both love Betsey Johnson [who uses a lot of pink in her designs]. So we gave it a Montauk surf-lodge feel, with a little bit of edge.” Katherine, 23, The North Face Outlet , learned about the series through HGTV. The sisters had been fans of the Novogratzes’ Bravo show “Nine by Design” and thought the duo’s quirky sense of style would mesh with their project: a dilapidated three-bedroom, two-bath bungalow with ocean views on Beach 92nd Street. Debra, 31, had purchased the home — sight unseen — at an auction last October for $150,000. Show producer Neil Regan knew the house would be a perfect fit. “It was a family-oriented story, and the sisters had a funky, discount north face , fun vibe. And the Novogratzes love hip and up-and-coming areas.” Indeed, the couple — who vetted all the projects for the 13 episodes — jumped at the chance to redo the place. “Some of the coolest people and places in this city are in the [outer] boroughs,” says Cortney. “Far Rockaway is definitely on the radar for all of the city’s hipsters. It’s turning into the new place to summer outside of the steamy streets of Manhattan.” The Rockaways may have hipster cred — but Williamsburg’s rompers and skinny jeans set isn’t hanging around after the sun goes down. The area is gentrifying, but there are still boarded-up houses next to renovated ones, and crime remains an issue. But the Chen sisters, who both live and work in Manhattan and head to their bungalow on weekends, north face womens , have grown to accept the Rockaways, warts and all. “It has this grittiness to it that reminds us of Venice Beach in the 1970s,” says Debra. “It’s edgy, but maintains an artistic vibe. Most of the residents have been around for generations, so there is a tight-knit community.” The sisters had a budget of $40,000 for renovations (the show does not pay for them, only the expertise and resources of the Novogratzes). That may sound like a lot, but “they couldn’t move in. The place was gutted,” says Regan. “We started work in the winter so it would be ready in time to move into in the summer.” First on the list to tackle was the kitchen, which had no appliances. “The bulk of the money went toward the kitchen,” says Cortney. They ripped out the particleboard cabinets and installed white ones from IKEA, adding an affordable, white subway-tile backsplash, then splurged on a baby-blue SMEG refrigerator (around $3,000), and perhaps their boldest choice — that custom pink Bluestar stove (around $5,000). “We wanted something that would take the stove out of the realm of the strictly utilitarian,” says Cortney. Then the couple addressed pricey structural issues. The stairway leading to the second floor had to be replaced, as did the hardwood floors in the master bedroom — and they had just four days to complete it all. “The whole idea of the show is to do makeovers quickly, north face discount , to show what can be accomplished with a budget and not an endless amount of time. And to inspire people to try something new in their own homes,” says Cortney. It certainly inspired the Chen sisters to do more. Debra, who works in investor relations, co-founded the Rockin’ Hood Development Project, an investment fund focused on rejuvenating distressed properties. This summer Chen and her sister plan to kick back on the upstairs balcony and enjoy the sights. “There is a surf shop on our block,” says Debra, “and all day long we watch surfers carrying their boards by our house.”
